Problem statement

As AI tools become part of daily life, most users have little visibility into how often they use them or the real financial and energy costs behind that usage. Without clear awareness, it’s difficult to make informed, intentional decisions about how and when to rely on AI.

Solution

Built by Kai Nguyen, a Computer Science & Applied Mathematics major at Furman University.

Key features included:

  • Basic authentication
  • Live database
  • AI cost calculator
  • Historic views to track progress

Process

We ran a focused 50 minute hackathon — brainstorm, build, test, and share — powered by Lovable.

Step 1 – Brainstorm

First, Kai spent a few minutes to think of an idea. We kept the scope intentionally small.

Step 2 – Prompt Design

Over the next five minutes, he completed a prompt template to use as his Lovable build script.

Step 3 – Build

Then, Kai copied and pasted the completed build script directly into the Lovable.

Step 4 – Test

After, he tested his app manually and fixed anything that needed polish.

Step 5 – Share

Finally, Kai shared his demo with the group for a critique with actionable feedback.

Outcome

Kai’s app and presentation were exceptional and won our honorable mention and a $25 Lovable gift card.

Key Results

Speed to Market

Delivered a POC in under an hour, cutting typical development cycles (2 week sprint) by 98.75%.

Feasability/Scalability

The core idea (an app that tracks/reflects AI usage) is feasible and scalable with existing tech.

Impact

Clear potential for positive human impact by increasing awareness and more thoughtful AI use.

Judge’s Feedback

“Nice spark –Kai’s app addresses a real, modern habit blindspot in building with AI tools.”
